Mayte Cruz, MFT Trainee

Marriage and Family Therapist Trainee

Trainee therapists are in the process of completing their academic training for a masters degree and have worked with children and families for several years. In order to sit for their licensing exam, they have to be supervised for approximately 3000 hours after getting their degree. They are currently being supervised by one of our licensed clinicians to obtain these hours and complete this training. Supervision is a collaborative process and your child will have the support of two very capable clinicians.

2.5 years of clinical experience & 5+ years of teaching experience

As a therapist, Mayte is driven by human nature to continue bettering oneself. She is in awe of her clients who do the hard work both inside and outside of the therapy room. With youth especially, it is amazing to witness the courage to want more for themselves and to be able to identify their goals. People are filled with passion, kindness, and connection that made this path feel as though it was chosen for her.

Inspired By

In Mayte’s day to day life, she strives to be a better person than she was yesterday. Time is our most finite resource and she lives her life with a deep gratitude to be able to help others. Through her journey, she has learned to appreciate the "little" things (which she has learned are not so little) and to allow herself to stop and smell the roses. She considers herself a lifelong learner, always being educated by the books, people, and world around her.

Tell Me More!

Mayte is the eldest daughter of immigrants, who both paved her way through their hard work and dedication. She is eternally grateful for their sacrifice for her to be able to follow her dreams and ignite her passion for working for the immigrant community. She is the eldest sister of two sisters and one brother, who all challenge her to grow while encouraging her along the way.

Outside of work, Mayte spends time with her incredible partner often walking their local trails, watching the latest movies, and finding humor in anything they do. She is also surrounded by amazing friends who teach her new things about herself and the world everyday. Additionally, she hangs out with her dog for as long as he allows her to and spoil him with new toys (probably too often!).

Background

Mayte is a first-generation student, who had no idea what to expect from secondary education and a career. She took a general psychology course in high school and was immediately drawn to the subject material. Throughout her journey in college, it became increasingly clear that she had a passion and drive for mental health as well as people.

When she graduated, she worked for a non-profit as a youth mental health educator. This position was a culturally sensitive approach to prevention and intervention for mental health. She was able to work with kids from age 5 to age 17, all while introducing mental health in an accessible manner. Through her work, she identified that her path was leading her to become a marriage and family therapist. During her graduate studies, she has been able to learn how to be an advocate, identify social justice lenses, and the importance of community and holistic healing. Mayte is certain that this is where she is meant to be. She believes that her own unique experiences will only further enrich the lives of those who she encounters, just as they enrich her life as well.
